Buy a rough nobody can see inside, drag your finger across it, and it splits exactly where you drew — opening a window on whatever was hidden in there: a blaze of violet, a crack that will ruin it, or nothing at all. Every cut spends weight to buy information, and no cut can be undone. Tap the stone and listen: a clean ring means solid, a dead thud means it is about to explode. Then face the only question that matters — one more facet for more money, or stop and sell. Carat, clarity, colour and FIRE are really measured: thousands of rays are traced through the facets YOU cut, so a 36° pavilion truly leaks light out of the bottom while a 40.5° one throws it back at you. The rainbow your gem casts on the velvet is computed from your own facets. Thirteen species, each with its own trap — amethyst's colour bands, emerald's garden of flaws, jadeite you cannot see into, and diamond, which has planes it wants to split along and detonates if you miss by seven degrees.
